Running From The Taxman, A Great American Road Trip, begins with an array of letters full of pleas and excuses from a fictional character, Simon Shenbetter, to the IRS. Having not paid his taxes for many years and realizing that he is doomed, Simon hits the road with the little cash he has loaded to a debit card. His road trip is chronicled in frequent emails to his new girlfriend, Maggie, with whom he shares his quest to find humanity in the tax code, along with his vision of the American Dream, and as an added bonus the ideals of characters he meets along the way.

Running From The Taxman A Great American Road Trip edition by Chris Plante Literature Fiction eBooks

What a fun way to learn about the tax code! Chris cleverly crafts "letters" to and from the taxman as he discovers how to fully comply with getting his taxes in from years past. Some of the excuses will be familiar to most of lost receipts, etc... As the protagonist flees the taxman across the country, he encounters many funny and questionable characters, describing his surroundings in such detail that you could imagine being right along-side him in the hippie-van. As I have a spouse who has prepared taxes, I found the book almost rediculously humorous, yet helpful!

Running From The Taxman A Great American Road Trip edition by Chris Plante Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

In this, his second book, Chris Plante explores an idea of what it means to be part of humanity. At times I laughed out-loud at the antics and ideas of the narrator, Simon Shenbetter, especially his advice to the "Taxman". In this season of tax-paying, it was a humorous and thoughtful read. If you've ever wanted to run away from your responsibilities, take a road trip and meet new & crazy people, this is the vicarious experience you're looking for.
There was a lot more in this book than I thought there would be. There were Russian business men chasing some guy who ripped them off, a family of muumuu wearing women and polyester clad men dodging Chinese mobsters, artistic hippies with the best batch of cupcakes ever, a gregarious Blessed Christian and a greedy investor. It was a love story, a discourse on the afterlife, a study of art, and it even had a little about taxes. Take the time and read it, you will love it!
Though life has its complexities which certainly make it interesting, profound realizations are often discovered in simplicity. This clever book is about Simon's own self-discoveries as he evades "The Taxman". The book was simple in that it was entertaining and quick to read but it certainly was not lacking in profundity and thought-provocation; Through Simon's letters, the author is able to concisely and wittily address several issues that are prevalent to humanity on a micro level and macro level- from individual psychological dilemmas, to family dynamics, business, society as a whole and even religion.
Through his observations, Simon is finally able to come to a moment of self-realization- something that everyone desires and some have achieved and that everyone should aspire to. The humor throughout the book was the icing on the cake. The author's use of adjectives created bountiful humorous imagery.I found myself giggling a lot while reading which is always good. I highly suggest this book.
Although on the surface a story about a man trying to evade his taxes, this book is a mosaic of real life stories and personalities- personalities which you are bound to cross paths with, or whom you may recognize in yourself.

What makes this a funny, and enjoyable read are the sometimes outrageous, yet quite plausible situations the protagonist finds himself in. Yet, his character as well as the many acquaintances introduced along the way, have a lot of depth. It is obvious that the author has a keen insight into human kind and relationships.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a witty, light-read for the summer.
Running From the Taxman is more, much more, than the humorous chronicle of the adventures of a quirky tax evader. It manages to combine a widely disparate, yet engaging, cast of characters with a plot featuring many unexpected twists and turns, just as any great road trip should.

Even if you've never had the dubious pleasure of confronting entrenched bureaucracy, not to mention continued correspondence with the IRS, Running From the Taxman is a great read that will have you nodding in agreement and laughing out loud, sometimes simultaneously. I highly recommend it!
This is a great book for whomever has dreamed of escaping one's responsibilities. The characters Simon met along the way kept me laughing. Additionally, anyone who has attempted filing one's own returns is sure to relate to the protagonist's frustrations with the tax code.
'Running from the Taxman' is a thoroughly enjoyable treat, perfect for a lazy summer day by the pool or beach. It gives us foreign readers a taste of modern Americana in a formula that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. I highly recommend Plante's book to all, American, or non!
